Scam Emergency Checklist
If you think you've just been scammed, work through these six steps in order. Then reach out to us — free and confidential.
Do these six things now
- 1
Call your bank immediately
Ask to freeze accounts and attempt a recall of recent transfers. The first 72 hours matter most.
- 2
Change your passwords
Start with email and banking, then any account sharing those passwords. Turn on two-factor authentication.
- 3
Preserve everything
Messages, emails, receipts, wallet addresses, phone numbers, usernames. Do not delete the scammer's accounts or chats.
- 4
Report to your national fraud centre
Canada: Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, 1-888-495-8501. USA: IC3.gov. UK: Action Fraud, 0300 123 2040. Australia: Scamwatch.
- 5
Protect your credit file
If identity details were exposed, place a fraud alert with your credit bureaus (Canada: Equifax & TransUnion).
- 6
Beware the second wave
Ignore 'recovery agents' who contact you afterwards promising to get your money back for an upfront fee.
Six red flags that almost always mean fraud
- They contacted you first — and everything moved fast
- Guaranteed or 'risk-free' high returns
- Pressure to pay by crypto, gift cards or wire transfer
- Requests to keep the relationship or deal secret
- Unexpected 'taxes' or 'fees' before you can withdraw
- A 'recovery agent' cold-calling you after a loss
